De Figuig à Tombouctou: Maroc-Mali: Histoire et patrimoine partagés
Studies on the various aspects of cultural and commercial relations between the two shores of the Sahara. A collective work that highlights the historical and cultural depth uniting Morocco and Mali, and, beyond that, the centuries-old links between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
The book highlights the major caravan routes linking Sijilmassa to Gao and Taoudeni to Djenné. These routes transported more than just gold, salt, and ivory; they also disseminated ideas, knowledge, and values. From the 13th century onward, these exchanges allowed Timbuktu to flourish as an intellectual center, propelled by its prestigious madrasas and the Koranic university of Sankoré. Brotherhood connections (Qadiriya, Tijaniya), architecture, travel narratives and social practices bear witness to a common spiritual and cultural heritage rooted in the Sahara and the Sahel.
The book, "From Figuig to Timbuktu: Morocco–Mali, Shared History and Heritage," invites us to rethink continental cooperation in light of a rich and profound intercultural history. It argues for a renewed understanding of geopolitical dynamics, where South-South cooperation becomes a driving force for development, openness, and mutual understanding in Africa.
